Creating fabric painted prints just got easier! Fevicryl introduces you to the art of Shibori, an ancient Japanese technique of dyeing fabric at home. Learn 5 different tie and dye techniques that will make your creations look nothing short of exceptional! Things you need: Fevicryl Fabric Colours - Black, Prussian Blue, Teal Blue, Fevicryl Acrylic Colour - White, Fevicryl Fabric Glue, Pieces of Mal and Poplin Fabric, Embroidery Rings of various sizes, Glass Bottle, Thick Card Paper, Plain White Paper, Thick Corrugated Sheet, Rubber Bands, Thick Thread (Twine), Tangoos/Nylon Thread, Regular Thread and Needle, Tailoring Chalk, OHP Sheet/Plastic, Pair of Scissors, Paper Cutter, Tissue Paper, Colour Palette, Water Container, Paintbrushes, Pencil. Tying Technique 1: Step 1: Take a glass bottle and place two rubber bands on either ends. Step 2: Pass a thread through the rubber band and tie a knot at one end. Step 3: Insert the fabric from the bottom and wrap the thread around it, going from bottom to top. Step 4: Slide the fabric, tie the thread and secure with a rubber band. Step 5: Repeat this process until you reach the rubber band on top. Tying Technique 2 Step 1: Take a piece of corrugated sheet and cut it into two triangular pieces. Step 2: Take a piece of Mal fabric and fold it into half. Step 3: Further fold the fabric into half from both the sides. Step 4: Fold the fabric into half once again. Step 5: Now make a triangular accordion fold from the folded fabric. Step 6: Sandwich the fabric between the two pieces of corrugated sheet. Step 7: Secure it in place with three rubber bands - one in the centre and two on either side. Tying Technique 3 Step 1: Take a piece of Mal fabric and fold it into half. Step 2: Fold it again in half from both sides. Step 3: Now make a triangular accordion fold from the folded fabric. Step 4: Tie three rubber bands around the triangular fold - one in the centre and two on either side. Tying Technique 4 Step 1: Take a piece of Poplin fabric and fold it in half vertically. Step 2: Place a piece of card paper (half heart shape) and trace the outline using a tailoring chalk. Step 3: Gather the cloth according to the shape of the card paper and tie it using regular cotton thread. Step 4: Wrap a piece of thick thread around the cloth at regular intervals. Tying Technique 5 Step 1: Take a piece of Poplin fabric and fold it in half. Step 2: Fold it into half once more and mark the centre. Step 3: Using that as a starting point, draw a spiral design on the cloth with a tailoring chalk. Step 4: Take running stitches on the spiral lines, starting from the centre. Step 5: Keep pulling the thread tight after a few stitches. Step 6: Continue doing so till you reach the end of the spiral. Step 7: Once you've reached the end, wind/coil some thread at the bottom and make a knot. Cut the extra thread off. Dyeing Techniques Step 1: Add a hint of Fevicryl Black to Fevicryl Prussian Blue to make Indigo colour. Step 2: Add water and mix to dilute the paint. Step 3: Wet the folded fabrics slightly and apply the paint as depicted. Step 4: Leave it to dry for at least 5-6 hours (until completely dry). Step 5: Only paint the visible sides of the rings with Fevicryl Acrylic White. Assembling The Loops Step 1: Remove all the threads and rubber bands from the fabric and iron it. Step 2: Take the inner embroidery ring and apply Fevicryl Fabric Glue. Step 3: Paste the cloth on to the ring and cut off all the extra edges. Let it dry. Step 4: Take the outer ring and trace a circle on a plain white paper. Step 5: Cut the circle. Step 6: Fit the two embroidery rings and apply Fevicryl Fabric Glue on the back of the outer ring. Step 7: Stick the paper to to the back of the ring. Disclaimer: You can achieve different effects despite using the same technique, depending on the penetration of colours.
