SOUNDBITE (French) Manuel Domergue, leader of 'Anti-Sarko' group: "Sarkozy is a synonym of brutal methods, he makes the tensions rise in France, he mounts people against each other. At one point we have to come back to what matters. What matters is to preserve a balance between powers, democracy, the independence of the media. Sarkozy is the very opposite of all this. At this point, (what matters) is not to vote for the left-wing, it is to vote against Sarkozy." 21. Wide of protesters arriving on Place of the Republic. STORYLINE : A group of protesters against French conservative presidential candidate Nicolas Sarkozy gathered at 6.30 on Tuesday (4.30 gmt) in front of the caf where Socialist pacifist Jean Jaures was assassinated in 1914, walked to Place de la Republique. They used whistles, pans, trumpets and megaphones, to wake people up and show that you can be an early riser and vote against Sarkozy, chanting 'The France of early risers against Sarko'. The group, called 'Anti-Sarko', was composed of left-wing militants, ecologists and people from all horizons who consider him and his ideas 'dangerous'. The name 'Anti-Sarko' refers to several recent speeches by Sarkozy in which he said he favours 'the France of early risers', meaning the French people who get up early to work who he therefore consider as the living force of the nation, opposed to 'assisted' persons. Manuel Domergue, leader of the group, called Sarkozy 'dangerous', saying; "We have twelve days left, twelve days of freedom, so we may as well make the most of it and hope that we will survive during the next five years. But if Sarkozy wins, and for the moment he is in the leading position, it will be very hard for every body." Domergue also stressed that the mobilisation has to reach further than the usual left-wing voters, saying that "At this point, (what matters) is not to vote for the left-wing, it is to vote against Sarkozy". As conservative presidential candidate Nicolas Sarkozy heads into the runoff with a strong edge in opinion polls, it is vital for Socialist candidate Segolene Royal to manage to mobilise far-left voters, as well as voters of the centre (especially the people who voted for centrist candidate Francois Bayrou). Two polls after Sunday's vote put Sarkozy in the lead. A CSA poll of 1,005 people had him at 53.5 percent and Royal at 46.5 percent. An IFOP poll gave him 54 percent and her 46 percent.
