A Portuguese Fort In The Middle East - Qal'at al Bahrain, Dilmun Settlement Over 5,000 Years Old!

At one point in history the Portuguese Navy was the envy of seafaring peoples across the globe. We know much of their history in Europe and South America, but the Portuguese also dominated trade in the Middle East for about a hundred years. This fort, Qal'at al Bahrain, as it is now known as the Bahrain Fort, is a testament to the Portuguese time in the Arabian Gulf, or Persian Gulf, if you will. The fort is built on and next to an ancient Dilmun settlement, which dates back from the time of 2,500 years BC. BC being Before Christ, not Before Caronavirus! Estimated to have been the capitol of the Dilmun civilization, this place is a true window into the dawn of civilization. A museum on site displays many of the artifacts that were uncovered in various archaeological digs over the years. During the time of Portuguese occupation, the fort protected the trading harbor, one of the most active in the region. This quaint little harbor, tho, was a trading destination long before and after the Portuguese were there.
