What are the complications with Breast Augmentation?

So some of the complications with breast augmentation are really based in asymmetry. So when I see a patient in consultation, I do all these measurements and I do an exam, and I try to point out some of these asymmetries prior to surgery. So each patient can have a different width on each side, different nipple position. Actually the chest wall can have different projection, making the implant look different on each side. Different breast volume. So there's all these different variables, including how stretchy the skin is too. So this makes the consultation a little bit more lengthy to explain all these, but I think if patients know about it after surgery, they won't think it's necessarily a complication. So I would say that sometimes people still have a little bit of asymmetry after surgery because they started out with it, but sometimes it can still be that one implant just drops at little bit different rate than the other one during healing. You can have malposition of the implant or asymmetry after surgery. Other things that are much less common and really rare are infection, capsular contracture, which is a scar tissue that forms around the implant, making it feel firm, and that might require further surgery. Fortunately, those things are really rare, and my capsular contracture rate is exceedingly low. So I feel very blessed in how the outcomes have been for my patients, but I do tell patients that implants are not forever devices. Odds are, sometime in your life you'd have to have another surgery to remove or replace the implant, but nobody knows how long that would be. It could be five years after surgery. It could be 10 years after surgery. It could be 30 years after surgery. But we do think that the newer fifth generation silicone implants will probably last a little bit longer, and the leak rate is thought to be less.
