Various of the four standing for photo-op STORYLINE US President Barack Obama arrived in Indonesia on Tuesday, his former boyhood home, and the second country on his 10-day Asia trip. Accompanied by wife Michelle, Obama flew into the Indonesian capital Jakarta, for a flying visit. Crowds waited in the rain to catch a glimpse of their motorcade as it arrived at Istana Merdeka, the white columned presidential palace reminiscent of the White House. President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono and his wife were on hand to welcome the Obamas at the palace, before meeting dignitaries and posing for photos. Obama is due to stay for just 24 hours, but shortly after he touched down his spokesman said the trip may be shortened further because of concerns about volcanic ash from the erupting Mount Merapi, in the country's south. Ash from the volcano has disrupted air travel into Jakarta over the weekend. Presidential spokesman Robert Gibbs said they were working on different scenarios for how the president would spend Wednesday morning, including starting his day of events earlier. Gibbs says it was unclear whether Obama would have to shorten or cancel any events, though he said the White House was hoping Obama could still deliver a speech planned for Wednesday. Touring Asia for 10 jam-packed days, he's fitting his visit in between the three days he spent in India and economic meetings in South Korea and Japan that start on Thursday. The US has increasingly embraced Indonesia as a moderate Muslim nation and partner in 'counter-terror' efforts in the wake of attacks in Bali, Jakarta and elsewhere in the region between 2002 and 2005. Like India, Indonesia is also seen as a counterweight to China's gathering strength. During his visit, Obama and Yudhoyono will hold a joint news conference. In the evening the president and first lady will be feted at an official dinner at the state palace complex. He also is scheduled to visit the giant Istqlal Mosque, the largest mosque in Southeast Asia and a popular tourist attraction. Obama moved to Jakarta when he was six, after his divorced mother remarried an Indonesian. He lived in the country until he was 10.
