Liu Xiang (刘翔) - How One Hurdler Inspired a Continent

The life story of Liu Xiang (刘翔) - an Olympic 110m hurdler from China, who has helped inspire a generation of athletes in Asia. He won an Olympic gold medal at the 2004 Athens Olympics, a gold medal at the 2007 Athletics World Championships, and set the world record time of 12.88s at 2006 Athletissima, making him one of the best athletes in the history of the sport. However, Liu is most well known for pulling out of the 2008 Beijing Olympics with an achilles injury. Liu was born in Shanghai and was largely raised by his grandparents. As a child, he was discovered by high school coach Sun Haiping who trained him to become the best hurdler in China. However, upon Liu's rise to dominance was interrupted when his grandmother passed from pancreatic cancer while he was a teenager. Liu's rise to dominance culminated in him winning Olympic Gold in the 2004 Athens Olympics, where he won over favourites Allen Johnson and Terrence Trammell. This pushed Liu to stardom in China, where he returned as a national hero. After his Olympic Gold, Liu continued to dominate in hurdles, winning the world championship in Osaka 2007, and also setting the world record in Lausanne 2006. However, as the 2008 Beijing Olympics approached, the expectations of the entire nation rested on his shoulders. But in the opening heat of the Olympics, Liu withdrew due to an achilles injury. Liu recovered for a year before he started making his comeback in track and field. Liu made a dominant comeback at the 2011 World Championships in Daegu, however, he was snubbed of a gold medal by Dayron Robles who interfered with Liu and disrupted his pace. However, Liu continued to improve, equalling the world record time of 12.87s in Oregon. But at the 2012 Olympics, Liu withdrew again, due to another achilles injury.
