#crete Lake Agia is an artificial lake on the island of Crete, in Greece. It was created in the early 20th century as part of a hydroelectric power plant which is no longer operational. The lake is now an important habitat for the local flora and fauna and it is part of the Natura 2000 network of protected areas. The area used to be a swamp and it was turned into a lake in the 1920s, in order to supply with water the Small Hydroelectric Station of Agia . The station operated for 76 years from 1929 to 2005 and it was then repurposed as a museum. For the visitors there are two lakeside cafes and a significant part of the bank is covered by a wooden pathway, along which there are some birdwatching platforms. Lake Agia is located in the Chania regional unit on the island of Crete, nine kilometers west of Chania and next to the village of Agia, which was named after.It covers an area of 450,000 square meters. and it is located at an altitude of 34 meters above sea level.[6] Like all of Crete, it lies within the Crete Mediterranean forests ecoregion.
