The "Mining Review Series" were some of the UK National Coal Board’s most well-known film work. (The NCB, which was privatized in 1987, was a statutory corporation created to run the nationalised coal mining industry in the United Kingdom.) By the 1980’s when this film was produced, the NCB had just about 100 safety films in circulation. Even though as technology for mine work was improving, after 1980, the coal industry began its declining, which increased the production costs for the films. The film unit was officially closed in April of 1984. Film begins with a miner-locomotive going through a tunnel (0:11). The engineer is shown operating the train (0:25). A railroad worker is shown (0:32). Haulage and Transport is the most dangerous field of mining (0:52). The year the film was made, 17 men died and 176 injured on haulage and transport systems even though improvements have been made (1:05). Miners are shown working in the mine, the rail-stop for the mine car is kicked free and it rolls backward and crushes the miner was working there (1:56). Main title is displayed “Safety on the Move” (2:02). The mine car is shown again with blood on it (2:10). The general transport rules are shown (2:39). The film shows a mine-loco driver taking a shortcut to get by an obstacle, and a deputy on his run, who then gets hit by the mine-loco driver (3:44). The film then shows the correct way to station a mine car and switch the tracks with a mine-loco safely going by (4:10). 50% of haulage accidents are often people who are not haulage personnel—most of the time officials (4:18). Film shows a miner trying to squeeze past a locomotive while he left its engine running (4:29). The film shows experienced miners using an improvised haulage chain, and the death of the electrician who was working with them (5:30). Film shows the proper haulage chain to use and the importance of putting a drag on the set (6:13). Narrator stresses that even though it is done right, accidents can still happen. The film shows a trolley making a bend and the rope slipping off the roller (6:30). Film shows miners using spare timber to repair train tracks, narrator stresses the importance of waiting for the proper tools (7:24). Arch distortion causes a “hold fast,” the miners attempt to lever the car back without releasing the tension in the rope (8:09). The film then shows the miners performing the correct procedure when dealing with a hold fast (8:58). Example of bad communication, they released the cart when the gate was still closed (9:39). Trying to drive a loco from outside the cab (10:21). Miners led a load by rope around a bend while the load was unbalanced (10:48). A new piece of technology to lead a mine car safely over a bend—the bending slot creeper (11:27). New ways of controlling traffic, a remotely controlled Warrick (11:57). Finally, Remotely controlled horizontal Manchester Gate is shown (12:13). The locomotive is shown speeding safely through the mine tunnel (12:32). Narrator stresses that safety means control and following the rules (13:01-13:36).
