A selection of photos from our recent Gulf of Maine video survey trawl. From January 9th of 2017, the SMAST Marine Fisheries Field Research Group set out from New Bedford, MA aboard the F/V Justice to undertake it’s second video survey trip to the Gulf of Maine. The survey team consisted of Captain Ron Borjeson and crewmembers Tim Barrett, Robert Kohl and Andrew Earle, joined by 4 researchers from SMAST: Kevin Stokesbury, Travis Lowery, Erin Adams, and Nick Calabrese. In 5 days at sea they completed 31 survey tows on Stellwagen Bank. 21 of those tows were conducted with an open cod end trawl with a camera system facing incluing cameras on the footrope and facing the cod end to observe and count fish as they passed into and through the net unharmed. A total of 10 closed cod end tows were also conducted to collect biological samples and verify the video observations. The study area was selected in 2016 based on the Division of Marine Fisheries industry-based survey for Gulf of Maine cod, and the recent NOAA cooperative trawl survey station locations. In particular, we wanted to survey in regions of Stellwagen Bank where Atlantic cod are known to be relatively abundant, and we wanted our study area to encompass areas that are commonly fished by the groundfish fleets.
