In the heart of Lagos, Nigeria, a thriving waterfront community called Otodo Gbame once stood — built with wisdom passed down over generations, and in harmony with nature. Residents primarily lived in homes on stilts above the Lagos Lagoon, giving them proximity to fishing — their primary source of livelihood — and well adapted to seasonal fluctuations in water levels. But in 2017, their homes were violently destroyed by the Lagos State Government, despite a High Court order against eviction. Demolishing Resilience tells the story of what was lost — not just homes, but also a heritage of sustainability — and questions who truly benefits from the so-called development which has come to the community's land. For the people of Otodo Gbame, climate justice is housing justice. The fight for communities like Otodo Gbame is a fight for our shared future. Join us! Learn more about our campaign for justice for Otodo Gbame, and join hands to support other waterfront communities facing threat of eviction at www.justempower.org.
