Hailing from Prague, Tomas Vrbada was recruited by the Lin Kuei for his impressive ability to evade capture. Able to transform into a wisp of smoke, his talents have proven useful on countless missions. Smoke has no memory of his childhood. His only family is the Lin Kuei, more specifically, the young Sub-Zero , who is like a brother to him. It has been Smoke's hope that through the Lin Kuei he will uncover his past and the source of his power. It is the fifth time that Smoke appears in the regular series (MKII (being hidden), MK3, MKD, MKA and MK9) and the eighth counting updates ( MKII , MK3 , UMK3 , MKT , MKD , MKU , MKA , MK9 ). In Mortal Kombat: Defenders of the Realm , Sub-Zero's memories show Smoke has black hair, while now he has white. The same is true for Cyrax and Sektor's skin tone. This is the first time in a game that Smoke's real name is mentioned; it is Tomás Vrbada . This is the second time Smoke has appeared in human form in canon in nearly 20 years. The last time was in MKII. If you select Noob Saibot in his classic PJ2 outfit, instead of Saibot (The Shadow), Smoke will appear in his classic outfit. This easter egg is not available in the PS Vita version. It's been revealed that he's from Prague; paradoxically, in the Kabal chapter of the story mode, when he defeats Cyber Sub-Zero, he's taken away to be "Reconfigured." When Smoke stands in front of him, Sub-Zero's scanner reads: Name: Smoke, Origin: Unknown. Although he does not appear in his Cyborg form, his alternate costume shares several similarities: His alternate costume is mostly made of metal. His mask has the same shape as his cyborg version from MKD. He briefly appears in his cyborg form in a vision of Raiden : He is all grey and identical to Sektor . He has a MK1 Retro Suit, even though it wasn't featured in this game. This can be seen when facing him as a hidden character and in the game's toy line. One of the designs before the development of the game was that his main costume was going to be the same main costume from Mortal Kombat: Armageddon (with minor changes). He has a fatality named Tremor: a character who appeared in Mortal Kombat: Special Forces and Mortal Kombat (2011) . At the end of his X-Ray, he says "Don't get up," a phrase later said by Batman in Injustice 2 upon winning a round. Interestingly, both games are made by Netherralm Studios.
