Gabrielle is still a powerful Category 4 storm; luckily, it is in the middle of the Atlantic and poses no threat to land. The Atlantic basin is staying active this week with not one, but two tropical waves that could develop into named storms. Far out in the central Atlantic, nearly a thousand miles east of the Lesser Antilles, Invest 93 is steadily organizing. Satellite images show growing clusters of thunderstorms, and the environment ahead looks favorable. A tropical depression is likely to form during the second half of the week as the system tracks west-northwest into the western Atlantic. Closer to the Caribbean islands, Invest 94 is already making its presence known. The disturbance is spreading heavy downpours and gusty winds across the Windward and Leeward Islands, and it will bring rain to Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands tonight into Wednesday. From there, the system is expected to slow down and turn northwest, approaching the Bahamas late this week. While its showers remain disorganized for now, it could still take shape once it reaches the warmer waters of the southwest Atlantic.
