A lonely wooden house stands in the middle of the frozen tundra at –69°C. Our family has just returned from a hunt. Carcasses, bags of meat and barrels of fat lie stacked against the walls. The smell of blood drifts for kilometers through the still, frozen air. That night the wolves come. First ten. Then a hundred. By morning three hundred gray bodies form a living ring around the house — and they do not leave. The pack attacks from every side. They hurl themselves at the door. They throw their weight against the windows until the glass explodes inward. They claw at the frozen earth and dig under the foundation. They scramble onto the roof and scratch at the boards above our heads. Snarling muzzles appear in every crack. Inside, we fight back with what we have. We tear apart furniture and nail boards over the windows. We drag heavy chests against the door. But the firewood is running out. Bullets are few. The temperature inside the house is falling. The children cry. The wounded grow weaker. The old ones pray. By the next dawn the house is nearly destroyed. Walls groan. Holes open in the floor where wolves have dug through. We know we cannot survive another night inside — but outside, the pack is waiting. We make a desperate choice: break out. Up through the attic, onto the collapsing roof, then a jump into the snowdrift and a run for the distant tree line with torches and a rifle. Father goes first. The children follow on ropes. Then mother. Then the elders. The episode cuts at the moment of the breakout. Father leaps from the roof into the snow — torch in one hand, rifle in the other. Out of the darkness a massive black wolf with yellow eyes launches straight at him. Whether the family survives or dies beneath the pack — we do not know.
