Hans Keulen (Chordoma Foundation) speaks to European advocates during the Advocacy in Action session at the ESMO 2014 Congress in Madrid. The importance of tissue banks cannot be overestimated for the research community and the patients seeking those innovative therapies targeting the right patient at the right time. The issues with tissue banking are many — ownership of the samples and the legislation involved in sharing and transporting these samples for research. Patient organizations can help the researchers by recruiting and informing patients about the importance of donating their tissue, helping to influence policy and regulation and ultimately co-running tissue banks with the medical community. This joint effort would definitely help to being more patients into the process and ultimately more tissue samples for research. Moderated by Kathy Oliver (International Brain Tumour Alliance), Gouri Shankar Bhattacharya, MD (Fortis Hospital), Erik Briers (The European Prostate Cancer Coalition | Europa Uomo), Aimo Stromberg (The Association of Finnish Cancer Patients), Hans-Joachim Schmoll, MD, PhD (Martin Luther University, Halle-Wittenberg, Germany) and Ian Banks (ECCO Patient Advisory Committee).
