In Episode 2 of The Bald Headteacher Podcast, Jeremy explores the theme of empowerment with Kevin Morland and Gill Watkins, founders of the inspirational Liverpool-based movement An Hour For Others. Jeremy sets out five core areas that must be addressed if we are to improve the lives of children, families, schools, and communities in what he describes as a genuine change of era. These five challenges are: 1️⃣ The changing face of childhood — driven largely by technology, a crisis in parenting, and the growing promotion of the individual over the family. 2️⃣ Rising inequality — a failure to prioritise the common good, which Jeremy argues is the clearest indicator of a failing society and one that attacks the education system like a virus. 3️⃣ The SEND crisis — Special Educational Needs and Disability provision is at breaking point, and while funding matters, the issue goes far deeper than money alone. 4️⃣ Money and resources — how do schools and communities adapt to a future of shrinking budgets, fewer pupils, and declining resources, while still protecting the common good? 5️⃣ Accountability and control — a suffocating, top-down system that stifles innovation, fuels fear and anxiety, and encourages a damaging herd mentality in education. These are big themes and complex problems. Alongside Gill and Kevin, Jeremy focuses in particular on the first challenge: how hyper-individualism is eroding the common good. Parents are increasingly forced to “shout louder” to get what they want for their own child, rather than asking how they can support the wider community—especially schools. Gill and Kevin explain how An Hour For Others empowers people to make positive change, support their local communities, and reclaim a sense of shared responsibility by simply giving one hour for others. A thought-provoking conversation about education, parenting, community, and what real empowerment should look like in modern society.
