You can purchase them new and often 2nd hand, and they come from many different companies. French Easel Weight empty 13lbs, set up takes about 3 minutes, tear down 2 minutes. Pros: It holds all of your supplies inside of it. It is one piece, just extend the legs, open the drawer and you are ready to paint. Easy to set up. Sturdy Takes large canvases up to 34" tall Cons: Heavy (look for one with a carry strap) Poschade Box with tripod: Weight: 13 lbs (including tripod) Set up 3 minutes plus faffing, tear down in one minute You can carry your supplies in it You can carry the box and tripod separately to balance out the load. It makes a nice compact table easel when painting at home. Holds canvases up to 17" tall; however, this is best for smaller panels. Box holds up to 3-4 wet panels of 8"x 10"-9"12" in size so you can transport your wet paintings home safely. *The extra piece of wood in the kit is a divider for the panel area. Cons: It takes a bit of fussing to make everything secure, and I often find it wobbly. This requires a sturdy tripod. I recommend purchasing one designed to hold a poschade box, as it can be much heavier and more unwieldy than a camera. Good tripods can be very expensive. This one came with the poshade box from Meeden, and while I feel it is sturdy, it is annoying to adjust. This option can get very expensive depending on where you buy your box and easel Lightweight watercolor field easel Weight 2lbs, set up was 5 minutes but I;m sure it gets quicher. Tear down was 1 minute. Pros: Compact and lightweight Supports up to 11lbs according to the manufacturer You can adjust the painting surface to any angle. You have a ledge to hold your palette, brushes, and watercolor (although there is only one watercup hole, and 2 would be better You can tape your apper directly to the painting surface as long as it's around 11"x14 or smaller. I wouldn't recommend using larger blocks on this easel. I use this easel when I am teaching indoors and I can see bringing it to a class, but I don't feel confident that it will hold up in the field. Cons: This would not hold up in any wind, and the easel is too flimsy to add a weight. All easels accepted my inexpensive Amazon clamp-on umbrella: https://amzn.to/4nuhBiG The French easel is my pick for oils, acrylics, or pastels, but I am likely biased because I have used one for a long time. It is heavy, though, when it is loaded with materials, so I only use it when I can park near where I am painting. Try a class! https://lindsayweirich.teachable.com NEW!
