🛕 Airavatesvara Temple: Overview • A 12th-century Hindu temple dedicated to Lord Shiva built by Chola emperor Rajaraja II (reign 1146–1172 CE). • Located in Darasuram, near Kumbakonam in Thanjavur district, Tamil Nadu. • It forms part of the Great Living Chola Temples UNESCO World Heritage Site, along with Thanjavur and Gangaikonda Cholapuram temples. Architecture & Art This temple is a remarkable example of Chola architecture — crafted from stone with intricate carvings, finely detailed pillars, sculptural panels of dancers, musicians, mythological stories, and celestial beings. The layout includes a sanctum (garbhagriha), multiple mandapas (halls), and elaborate sculptural work showing cultural life and divine theme. 🛕 Gangaikonda Cholapuram : Overview & History • Built between 1023 and 1036 CE by Rajendra Chola I to commemorate his victorious expedition to the Ganges River in northern India. • The name Gangaikonda Cholapuram literally means “The town of the Chola who brought the Ganges” — Rajendra I brought sacred Ganga water to this site as a symbol of imperial success. • The temple was the centerpiece of the Chola capital for about 250 years. • It is an active Shiva temple and also part of the Great Living Chola Temples UNESCO World Heritage Site. Architecture & Sculpture • Built in classic Dravidian (Chola) architectural style with a square plan and multiple mandapas (halls). • The vimana (tower over the sanctum) rises to about 55 m (180 ft), slightly shorter than Thanjavur’s but elegantly proportioned. • The temple houses a massive Shiva lingam (around 13.5 ft tall) and an enormous monolithic Nandi (bull) statue facing the sanctum. • Carvings depict Shaivite legends, figures of deities like Vishnu, Durga, and Surya, and intricate Chola art across pillars and walls
