"Making Dü": In February, 2017, {AN} Eel inititated an album of duet recordings that I leanred of when he invited me to it via Facebook. He paired me with my old friend mIEKAL aND who I've known since around 1984. He also asked the 2 of us to design the album cover. Since mIEKAL lives in Wisconsin & I live in Pennsylvania, our duet was to consist of files we'd send to each other & whatever mixes the 2 of us made of them. I thought of a duet as being like a game of ping pong so I put on binaural mics connected to a mini-disc recorder for good spaital effect & recorded bouncing ping pong balls around in my home - starting my backyard & working my way up to my attic. To document this I recruited my friend Gwen Sedlar to shoot iJones footage. mIEKAL sent me a CD cover sized image for me to rework for the cover. I added an overlay of a picture of me in ping pong playing position + a ping pong net + a negative white cut-out of me in the ping pong position inverted on the other side of the net. That became the cover. Then I turned the audio recordings into 61 short audio files which I sent to mIEKAL for him to rework. I made the 61 files samples & recorded 17 realizations of their playing. I posted the 2nd realization to Souncloud here: / ping-pong-realization-02 . I proposed naming our collaboration "Du" because that's the 1st syllable of "Duet". mIEKAL suggested adding the umlaut, the ¨, over the u & I agreed. mIEKAL used my files in combination with his main sound of "a 2 second sample of an owl stretched 8000%" & renamed the piece "OWL PONG". We agreed to then make it tOGGLE cASE in honor of both of our names being written in tOGGLE cASE. This was then published as part of a Bandcamp release called "Two Halves: Volume One" available here: https://panpanpanaviandistresscall.ba... . This movie shows edited representative clips of my original ping pong process followed by the raw unedited original footage rendered silent & resized to fit overtop the CD cover materials & sped-up to be the same duration as "oWL pONG" which consitutes its sound. The image of the owl was coincidentally sent to me by my friend Amalia &, therefore, seemed perfect as the owl icon for the movie. - April 8, 2017, notes from tENTATIVELY, a cONVENIENCE.
