But have you checked out this hand-made piece at Hsinchu Tiangong Temple? The craftsmanship is nothing short of impressive and it was carefully decorated and designed by the inmates at Hsinchu Prison. As many as 100,000 toothpicks, precisely trimmed and placed, were used to create a life-like texture for the many animals in this work brimming with the force and beauty of nature. Let’s take a look. A spray gun is carefully wielded to color the sculpture, gradually revealing a life-like tiger. Look closely, and you’ll see that individual toothpicks were used to create the texture of fur. The artist trims a bunch of toothpicks to an even length, then places them one-by-one onto the structure. The meticulous craftsmanship is nothing short of impressive, but what’s even more so is that these hands belong to an inmate at Hsinchu Prison. Inmate Hsinchu Prison The challenge I often encounter is the placing: on a given you may have it done like this, but by the next day—because it’s secured with PVA glue, which takes time to dry—after it dries, what you see here will flatten. The crafting process takes patience and skill, but he seems to enjoy it, saying that it makes him calmer and more grounded. The sculpture speaks for itself: every single strand of hair on the animal forms was glued on meticulously and precisely, which is evidently a result of perseverance. Inmate Hsinchu Prison My friends and family were supportive. I only started slowly learning this after being admitted. I think what I learned inside will become a useful skill and source of livelihood after I’m released. This Lantern Festival piece, titled “Sustainable Forest” and installed at Hsinchu Tiangong Temple, was made with approximately 100,000 individual toothpicks. It features several life-like animals, including an orangutan, a platypus and a rabbit, among others. Visitor Hsinchu Tiangong Temple Prison I’m really so impressed by the trainers working in prisons. What’s more, I’m only noticing now how skilled these inmates are. I brought my kid here specifically to see it today. Han Chih-hsiang Operation Section, Hsinchu Prison We select inmates serving long sentences. During this long period of time, through such difficult works, they can develop their character, calm down and do these crafts well. This cultivates their resilience to setbacks, which reduces recidivism. This large decorative lantern made with toothpicks is both fresh and endearing, proving that there’s a bright future ahead of one’s criminal past, and a second chance in life.
