Like many diseases, the earlier you are aware of the disease and can begin treatment, the better. PKD, is a form of chronic kidney disease. Since PKD is a genetic disease, be informed about how it can pass in to your children. So to prevent PKD from worsening, you want to keep your kidneys as healthy as possible. This means maintaining healthy blood pressure because that directly correlates with kidney health. You can do this by taking the blood pressure medications prescribed by your doctor as directed, eat a low-salt or low protein diet containing plenty of fruits, vegetables and whole grains, maintaining a healthy weight, exercising frequently, and quitting cigarettes and limiting alcohol.
