Masaya, huh... Most people know them more for the Langrisser games, I hold them dearly for the Cho Aniki games. And I don't get what's good about Assault Suit Leynos when it's on NSO; too clunky! Then this new publisher, Rainmaker Productions, out of nowhere hired M2, THE PREMIUM PORT KING, of all porting experts, porting a Masaya game, which never happened BEFORE! As far as I know, at least. They made the right call. I love this game! Weirdly enough, by instinct I should hate it! In a nutshell Valken is a run n gun platformer, like Megaman. But people remember it mainly as a mech simulator or something. Imagine you play Megaman but you're in the Ride Armor all the time. That's Valken. Oh yeah, it's heavy! Or should I say, hefty. Turning around is as responsive as you can expect, but you'll notice lots of delays when you're in the air! You can dash, but it's hard to stop when you commit to it. With X you can just jump! Among robots, actually Megaman X is crazy agile. Valken should be the base line. Thankfully the game is quite aware of the heft and doubles down on it. In exchange of its lacking aerial agility, Valken is quite a capable machine of destruction. You have 4 weapons, though ultimately only 2 is usable and you have to just focus on 1 of them, and they can be aimed! X can't do that until Megaman X7! The dash is also fast. The aim can be fixed, and the most important function when on ground is the super duper durable shield! The shield will nullify all damage from all directions! But you can't attack while using it, or recharging your weapon, so you need to lift it up sooner or later. One notable detail is unlike Megaman, Valken is not allergic! Most strategies let you touch enemies and you'll be fine! Remember this well when you go for the offensive! If you think of the game critically, this is a pretty shallow game, actually. The stage design isn't complex, though you gotta remember the mech is not as agile as Megaman, so it can't be helped, the scoring is also shallow, no multipliers and ultimately it's about hunting down / farming enemies, also the patterns are not that complex. I also don't like the branching stages just to ensure you have enough fire power to advance safely. But none of them are too awful so let's say it's a nitpick. Where the game shines is the sheer epic presentation of the game and the ridiculous attention to detail. Destructible terrains (and it's just cosmetic!), multiple stage routes, failure consequences, the awesome setpieces, and it has a good balance of hard but fair design that it feels rewarding to play well to no continue! The story is also great with its suspense and drama. There are some depictions dark enough to make Konami censor the game to let it pass NoA's censors at the time. Oh right, censorship. One of the main selling point of this port is the retranslated English text and preserved content compared to the Japanese original, dark scenes and all! As you can expect, this is a godly port done by M2, even including REPLAY! This is recorded using the Replay feature. Thank goodness! This game can be unforgiving at times, though still on the sane level. Assault Suit Valken is a great game to play through when you don't think about it too critically. Be a great pilot, seep the atmosphere in, and treat yourself with this game's awesomeness. This is the Nintendo Switch port. It also includes interview video and new goodies! https://www.nintendo.com/store/produc... #assaultsuitvalken #mecha #nintendoswitch
