Save Lakes, Save Lives | Karnataka Pollution Crisis “Neeriddare Naale, Neerigaagi Nadige” (If There Is Water, There Is Tomorrow) is not just a slogan—it is a warning and a call to action. Anekal lake pollution, Hennagara Amanikere pollution, Chandapura lake pollution, Muthanallur lake pollution, Bidaraguppe lake pollution The BKS Anekal Unit recently organized a strong public protest under the banner “Neeriddare Naale, Neerigaagi Nadige” against the alarming pollution of lakes in and around Anekal Taluk, Bengaluru Urban District. The protest highlighted the systematic failure of the Karnataka Government and the Karnataka State Pollution Control Board (KSPCB) in protecting vital water bodies that sustain thousands of farmers and residents. Hennagara Amanikere & Anekal Lakes Under Severe Threat The Hennagara Amanikere, once a lifeline for agriculture and groundwater recharge, is now heavily polluted. Similar conditions prevail in: Chandapura Lake Hennagara Amanikere Muthanallur Lake Bidaraguppe Lake Several smaller lakes across Anekal Taluk These lakes are receiving untreated industrial effluents, sewage water, and chemical waste, pushing the region toward an irreversible ecological disaster. Industries, STPs & Illegal Pollution Practices The primary sources of pollution include: Industries and manufacturing units Commercial establishments Residential apartments and layouts (authorized & unauthorized) Villages without proper sewage treatment Although many industries are mandated to install Sewage Treatment Plants (STPs), most do not operate them due to high maintenance costs. Instead, they: Store untreated wastewater Release pollutants into lakes during nighttime Conduct reverse borewell injection using RO waste water Illegally divert polluted water into groundwater sources This practice has poisoned lakes, borewells, farmland, and drinking water, directly impacting farmers and rural families. Failure of Local Bodies & KIADB Legal Loopholes When villagers and farmers approach Gram Panchayats, Town Panchayats, Municipal Councils, and City Municipalities, they are turned away. Local bodies cite: Recent court rulings KIADB clauses claiming they have no authority to act against industries As a result, complaints are pushed between departments while pollution continues unchecked. Absence of Pollution Control Board Staff & Allegations of Corruption One of the gravest concerns raised by BKS leaders is the absence of KSPCB staff in the Anekal region. Officers are stationed at the Rajajinagar Head Office, far from affected areas Letters and complaints go unanswered Inspections are deliberately delayed By the time officials visit, industries temporarily operate STPs to hide violations. BKS leaders allege that bribery and corruption are the main reasons staff are not stationed locally. “If officials were posted in Anekal, polluters would be caught immediately. Keeping officers far away benefits industries, not people,” said BKS representatives. Impact on Farmers, Health & Future Generations Due to unchecked pollution: Agricultural land is turning infertile Borewells are contaminated Farmers are losing livelihoods Residents face rising health issues “Our goal is to ensure clean air, pure water, and fertile soil for future generations. We do not want our children to spend their lives in hospitals,” said BKS leaders during the protest. BKS Demands Immediate Action BKS Anekal Unit demands: Permanent posting of KSPCB officials in Anekal Taluk 24×7 monitoring of industrial STPs Strict action against night-time effluent dumping Accountability of Karnataka Government & Pollution Control Board Restoration and revival of polluted lakes Water is life. Without water, there is no tomorrow. WEBSITE - https://bks4anekal.org.in
