Before talking about photography, it felt important to answer a simpler question: who is the person behind the camera? In this video, I introduce myself and walk through the path that shaped my work as a photographer. From picking up a camera at six years old, to documenting New York City as a teenager, to working in California as a global marketing intern while beginning university, and eventually moving to Savannah, Georgia where I spent four years building my first long-term documentary project that became my first book. Over the past five years, I’ve returned to New York City where I’ve been documenting daily life, protests, public events, and the moments that exist between them while developing my current long-term project SOULS IN AN URBAN LANDSCAPE, which will eventually become my second book. This video is less about gear or technique and more about the philosophy behind the work. Why I photograph, what the medium has taught me about paying attention, and why I believe photography is ultimately a way of moving through the world with curiosity, patience, and responsibility. If you’re interested in documentary photography, street photography, photojournalism, and the deeper ideas behind image-making, you’re in the right place. ———————————————————————————————— In this video we discuss: • How I started photography at six years old• Starting a photography club in high school• Documenting New York City at sixteen• Moving to California and working at Specialized Bicycle Components• Building my first long-term project in Savannah, Georgia• Photojournalism with the Savannah Morning News & Savannah Tribune• Photographing protests and public life in New York City• My current long-term project: SOULS IN AN URBAN LANDSCAPE ———————————————————————————————— Follow my work: Instagram: @JaredTapyTikTok: @Jaredthomastapy_Substack – The Creative Connection ———————————————————————————————— Ket Words: documentary photography street photography documentary photographer photographer journey life as a photographer photojournalism photography philosophy why I photograph photographer story photography career ————————————————————————————————
