Have you ever noticed how, for a Scottish soldier to have his* own eponymous tune, he has to be a commissioned officer, usually of high rank? (An exception is made for pipers.) I wrote this strathspey in honour of my four greats grandfather, John Cameron, from the Highland village of Kilmonivaig. In 1808, as a fifteen year old farm labourer, he enlisted as a private in the first battalion of the 71st Highlanders and left the military about ten years later, having failed to secure any promotion. We have a record of him in Paris in 1815 and, from the battle honours of his battalion, he presumably fought throughout the Peninsular War and at Waterloo. I imagine his military career consisted of long periods of boredom punctuated by moments of bowel-loosening terror. Fortunately John Cameron made it through in one piece - for which I am especially grateful, since otherwise I would not be here to write this. It is always a he!
