A migrant domestic worker employment contract is for two years, but if terminated early by the employer or employee, domestic workers only have two weeks to find a new job. The Hong Kong policy known as the “two-week rule” places many in a vulnerable position, compounded by the live-in requirement, which requires migrant domestic workers to live in the homes of their employers. This means for two weeks, early-terminated migrant domestic workers are weighted with both seeking employment and a roof over their heads, often provided by churches or non-profit organisations.
