Maize for hungry soils

The Improved Maize for African Soils (IMAS) project is developing maize varieties that respond better to the small amounts of fertilizer that farmers in eastern and southern Africa can afford to apply to their crops (less than 20kg of fertilizer per hectare on average). Maize is the staple food in the region and provides an important source of livelihood for smallholder farmers. We spoke to farmers, agriculture extension officials and socioeconomists to get their perspectives on access to fertilizer and the potential benefits of nitrogen use efficient (NUE) maize for smallholder farmers in sub-Saharan Africa.
