http://almaghrib.org/seminars/ethics/... A lot of people ask about "Birr Al Walidayn," in the context of what if my parents weren't that good to me? I hate my parents.... Do I still have to maintain good relations with them? What if they want to cut me off, and every time I talk with them they are harsh toward me? Allah tells us in the Quran that even if your parents try to force you to worship other than Allah, then do no obey them. But, he follows it up with saying that one should keep good companionship with them. What you're being asked to do is, even if they're asking you to do bad, you still maintain good relations with them. You weren't asked to love your parents. Rather, be dutiful toward them. Even if there is something between your parents, you still need to show them the acts of love. You respect them, be near them when they need you, help them out, listen to them, and obey them in any manner that doesn't include disobedience to Allah. It's about showing duty toward your parents by loving them in action. More on this subject about building a healthy family life in my seminar "Protect This House," coming to a city near you. http://almaghrib.org/seminars/ethics/...
