After the devastating 1990s, the recovering North Korea found the need for indigenous armored vehicles perhaps even more crucial than before. With the Soviet Union gone and the Republic of Korea’s Army (ROKA) having transformed during the late 1980s and 1990s from a fairly backwater army to one that now fielded a large number of vastly superior K1 and K1A1 MBTs, the Korean People’s Army found itself with perhaps the most numerous, but also terribly isolated and horrendously outdated armored fleet.
