On show at the Division of Industrial Design (DID) Grad Show 2023, meet Auxobrace – a groundbreaking rehabilitation device for patients who have undergone sternal surgery. Auxobrace is the brainchild of DID Class of 2023 student Siew E Ian, and was inspired by his own experiences having undergone two rounds of open-heart surgery since early childhood. Working with surgeons, nurses and physiotherapists at NUH and using flexible 3D-printed materials, E Ian designed Auxobrace to be lightweight and comfortable for patients of all ages. The device uses vacuum forces to contract a network of tessellating air bladders, giving patients precision control to support the sternum bone during their recovery process. E Ian has filed a patent for Auxobrace and plans to explore how it can be applied to other forms of compression rehabilitation. “Being able to do something close to my heart (literally!) with support from the division really gave me overwhelming motivation to make something impactful,” said E Ian.
