The Temple of Karnak is one of the largest and most impressive religious complexes ever built by humankind. Located on the east bank of the Nile, in Luxor, it was the spiritual heart of ancient Egypt for over two thousand years. The core of the complex is dedicated to the god Amun-Ra, but within its walls you’ll also find sanctuaries dedicated to Mut and Khonsu, forming the so-called Theban Triad. Started during the 11th Dynasty (around 2000 BC) and expanded until the Ptolemaic period, Karnak is the result of the collective work of dozens of pharaohs. Each left a tangible mark: monumental pylons, vast courtyards, granite obelisks, and the famous Hypostyle Hall with its 134 columns, towering up to 23 meters, decorated with carvings and reliefs depicting battles, offerings, and religious ceremonies. The temple was a pilgrimage center and the starting point of the annual procession for the Opet Festival, during which the statue of Amun was carried to the Temple of Luxor along an avenue lined with sphinxes.
