Police vehicle drives away STORYLINE: A key Bali bomb suspect on Wednesday admitted in court he was the operational chief of Southeast Asia's terror group, Jemaah Islamiyah, and said he knows Osama bin Laden "very well." Ali Ghufron, alias Mukhlas, testified at the trial of Abu Bakar Bashir, a Muslim cleric and the alleged spiritual head of Jemaah Islamiyah, who is accused of treason. Earlier, alleged Bali bombing mastermind Imam Samudra claimed he was beaten by Indonesian police after his capture. Samudra's testimony was cut short by the judge after his claims of police brutality fired up the pro-Bashir crowd. Like the others he did not indict the cleric in the Bali bombing or other cases. Before Samudra took the stand, the court heard from a suspect named Mubarok, who is accused of delivering the van used in the Bali attacks. Despite admitting he knew Osama bin Laden, Ghufron denied Al Qaida had funded the attack. He told a packed courtroom he took over as Jemaah Islamiyah's operations chief after his predecessor, Riduan Isamuddin, alias Hambali, went into hiding.
