Most people frame the choice between academia and industry as “freedom vs. money,” but I think that misses the deeper question: what kind of machine do you want shaping your curiosity, learning, and impact? In this video, I reflect on why I originally chose academia to maximize learning, how my views have shifted over time, and how academia and industry differ in their definitions of success, feedback loops, incentives, and ethical pressures. Drawing on my experience in academia and biostatistics, I explore pigeonholing, autonomy, impact, and what it really means to make a difference with your work. Please chime in with your thoughts!
