Новосибирск в 1970-е годы Novosibirsk in the 1970s Music: Владимир Трошин – Песня о Новосибирске Music: Vladimir Troshin - The Song of Novosibirsk Novosibirsk is the largest city, by population, in Siberia and the 3rd largest in Russia after Moscow and St. Petersburg. The original settlement was founded in 1893 at the site of the future Trans-Siberian Railway bridge crossing the River Ob and was originally named Novonikolayevsk in honour both of Saint Nicholas and of the reigning Emperor Nicholas II. The bridge was completed in the spring of 1897, making the new settlement the regional transport hub. The importance of the city further increased with the completion of the Turkestan–Siberia Railway in the early 20th century. The new railway connected Novonikolayevsk to Central Asia and the Caspian Sea. During Joseph Stalin's industrialisation effort, Novosibirsk secured its place as one of the largest industrial centres of Siberia. Several massive industrial facilities were created, including the 'Sibkombain' plant, specialising in the production of heavy mining equipment. The city's rapid growth and industrialisation led to Novosibirsk being nicknamed the "Chicago of Siberia".......
