Socially Silent: my relationship with social media | Siena Wescott-Toi | TEDxYouth@Haileybury

Social media is about balance. Whilst it helps people from around the globe communicate it also creates and is creating a society that strives for the same thing, perfection, an artificial happiness, whilst being unhealthily addicting. I describe my journey with social media and how I became socially silent, teaching me many things about the world around me and about myself, most notably how to communicate with myself. I describe my step-by-step thought process, and what caused me to feel this way but also the benefits of not being on social media. Whilst I describe social media as not being an asset to my mental health and my self-confidence, I also speak about the benefits of social media to society, and how I harnessed those benefits to rekindle my relationship with social media. But my central message is to the viewer, to experience what I experienced and to understand how it can be hugely beneficial to their physical and mental well-being; something that is more important in this day and age than ever before.
