Life in the Char (riverine island) areas is extremely difficult. Sometimes, the people of these regions harvest golden crops and smile with joy, and at other times, they shed tears due to unfair prices or are devastated by floods that submerge their lands. Dear viewers, today I will tell you the story of such a char—one that inspired a legendary love story which shook the nation through a film. The movie is Khairun Sundari. Yes, today we are heading to the house of the real Khairun Sundari, to see how her family is doing today. Let’s travel to Merurchar in Bakshiganj, Jamalpur district. Dear viewers, before we begin, I have just one request—if you haven’t yet subscribed to our channel Ei Shomoy Kotha Bole, please consider subscribing now. And to those who have already subscribed—thank you very much for your continued support and love. Khairun Sundari is a legendary name in Bangladesh's folk culture and rural love stories. A tale that once lived through word of mouth later made its way to the silver screen. Today, we are visiting the real birthplace of that story—Merurchar in Bakshiganj, Jamalpur. The film Khairun Sundari, released in 2004, created a stir throughout the country. But many don’t know that the roots of this story lie in the very village of Merurchar. Here lived a young woman named Khairun, whose real-life events eventually became part of folk songs, plays, and films. Although the movie portrays a romantic tragedy, was it really a love story in real life? Let’s hear from Khairun Sundari’s nephew. Was it truly about land disputes? Yes, the real story was a land-related conflict between two families. And Mannan, the male character from the movie, is still alive. However, due to his age and religious reasons, he did not speak on camera. Yet, according to the elderly villagers, Khairun Sundari was indeed a beautiful and pious woman. Her father, Azgor Ali Master, was a schoolteacher in Merurchar and a significant landowner. Khairun was not drowned in the river, as often rumored. Her eldest son, Bir Muktijoddha (freedom fighter) Khairul Islam, shared in various media outlets that Khairun’s married life was happy. She had five sons and one daughter—the daughter died in childhood, and the five sons survived. Around mid-1968, following a domestic dispute that escalated into a physical altercation, Khairun died. He further explained that in 1973, Khairun’s father, Azgor Ali Master, filed a case at the Jamalpur court in newly independent Bangladesh, alleging that his daughter had been murdered. However, Fazol Haque (Khairun’s husband) was proven innocent. Later, Fazol Haque went for Hajj in 2002 and passed away in Mecca. Today, the house in Merurchar where Khairun lived still stands silently, as a witness to history. It is more than just a building—it is a piece of history, a timeless, real-life story.
