Eunice Gayson in the Grip of Frankenstein There's something about the cinematography of Jack Asher which always seems particularly evocative and unique. Anything I were to say, however, would be an oft repeated cliché. Stuff about painting with light and each frame being frameable etc. But 'The Revenge of Frankenstein' is one of those films that looks so beautiful that you could just watch it with the sound off and revel in the visual splendour of it all. Early Hammer Horrors were something special. They had a particular look and a particular standard of acting. Acting that some might call theatrical but is, in fact, still and slow. Cushing's confidence in this film is astounding. He just has so much control over everything he does, every classic Peter Cushing piece of props work. He also rescues Frankenstein from the slightly too evil and slightly too prone to hysteria version of the previous and classic 'Curse of Frankenstein'. Here, however, the plot isn't quite as seductive. It's more of a brain transplant gone wrong (mind you, most Frankenstein films have an element of brain transplants gone wrong about them). It does have the charming Francis Matthews as a willing pupil (unlike the rather annoyingly antagonistic Robert Urquhat in 'Curse of Frankenstein'). But mainly we have Eunice Gayson as the striking heroine of the piece. Gayson was about to be enshrined into everlasting fame as the first of the James Bond girls as she meets James Bond in a casino and becomes his when-not-on-a-mission girlfriend for the first two films. Here, she seems softer and more delicately sympathetic, not quite knowing what has happened to Michael Gwynn. Bernard Robinson's set design takes us into a great Frankenstein lab with swivelling eyeballs that follow a flame, hands in glass tanks that try to grab at us, spinning wheels and lights that bounce colourfully on and off. Sangster's scrip radiates with classic moments for character actors. When people are slagging off Sangster, they seem to overlook just how much character there is. That we have all those great character actors available for a scene or two is just icing on the cake. And the whole piece is held together by the always reliable Terence Fisher slowly establishing himself as something of a horror auteur, whether he meant to do this or not. Don't get me wrong. If you watch this film late at night after a heavy day, it will not keep you up riveted to the screen. You have to meet it half way if you're going to meet it at all. I must admit that I have lost count of how many times I've watched this film over the years.
