Certain words and phrases can unintentionally create an arrogant mindset or detract from the power of your message. As writers, we need to be more critical and less cynical. Here are the six common phrases I think writers should forget: Thought Leader: Calling yourself a "thought leader" can sound arrogant and creates an elite mindset, suggesting there's a divide between "leaders" and "the average". I believe everyone leads in their own capacity. Let others use this term—don't call yourself one. Lived Experience: In the English language, simply saying "experience" is already clear and descriptive. Adding "lived" is unnecessary, especially in non-fiction, because we already understand you've experienced it; it's not a "dead experience". You Are The Brand: You are an individual, a unique spirit—not a commodity or a commercial. While you can sell your books and artwork, you are not your books or your art. Scrap this to keep things personalized and remember you are an individual. Hold Space: As a writer, you can't always "hold space" for your characters, as this means not judging them. To create a compelling narrative, you sometimes need to be critical and designate a character as a villain. Live Your Truth: Truth is an objective reality, not subjective, where one person's truth contradicts another's. Truth and a lie are binary. Scrap this idea because objective reality matters for everything from science to writing; living "your truth" can be dangerous. Check Your Privilege: Everyone has privileges, like being blessed to live in a certain country, or being a podcaster and writer. When people tell you to "check your privilege," it often implies that your success isn't earned—that it was just handed to you. Instead, count your blessings and use your privileges to your advantage.
