Do you know the origin of the Way of the Cross? Together with some professors from the Studium Biblicum Franciscanum, we discovered the biblical, historical and archaeological elements of this devotion. Every day in Jerusalem, pilgrims from all over the world walk the Via Dolorosa to contemplate the mystery of Christ's Passion. The current layout of the Way of the Cross has its roots in the ancient tradition of the Church of Jerusalem, although this devotion developed more in the West. The oldest testimony is that of the pilgrim Egeria, who says she took part in a procession from the Mount of Olives to the Holy Sepulchre on the evening of Holy Thursday.
