SOUNDBITE (English) Jean Kirkland, without power: "Right there, I got space heaters, you know, in the house, and then I've been able to use my gas stove, you know, even though it's electric. But on the top, you can, you can light it, and it'll come on, you know, so that gives us a little more heat too." 4. Gas heater 5. SOUNDBITE (English) Jean Kirkland, without power: "You know, when you're used to certain things, you know you miss them when they're gone, and so without the lights it's like you know, you have to find other resources to kind of manage with." 6. SOUNDBITE (English) Gilbert Booker, without power: "Oh, it been, it been, it been quite a hassle but, like I said, you know, without light it's kind of difficult. But you know we just got to learn to get through all that. Got to deal with it as it comes." 10. Light bulb 11. SOUNDBITE (English) Gilbert Booker, without power: "You know how it is. When it's dark you just can't, you just can't maneuver around the house even though you know the house inside and out. It's just, it's a whole lot of difficult things at night that you want to do and can't do and most of all you miss TV." 12. Gilbert Booker turns electric lantern off and on 13. SOUNDBITE (English) Gilbert Booker, without power: "Like we also say, you know, 'why me?' That's just the way that God works. We can't do nothing about. We just have to take what he give us." 14. Gas heater 15. Gilbert Booker sits on the couch in his home with his sister behind him STORYLINE: Icicles clattered from streets and power lines as the afternoon sun shone down on the Pecan Grove neighborhood in Lexington, Mississippi on Tuesday. Inside, Jean Kirkland used a lighter and a piece of paper to light her gas stove top. Kirkland and her daughter have been using the stove and a couple of gas heaters to keep warm since the neighborhood power went out Sunday morning. Dressed in a thick track suit Tuesday, Kirkland said one of the worst parts has been living in the dark. She navigates her home at night using lanterns and flash flights. While she still has water, she said it mostly comes out cold, and she will have to heat it to bathe. "When you're used to certain things, you miss them when they're gone," Kirkland said, adding that she misses being able to watch TV. A few doors down, Gilbert Booker knocked on a neighbor's door who has a generator, asking if he could charge his phone. Booker has also been able to keep his home warm with a gas heater. Since the power went out, he's taken in his sister, whose home is entirely electric, and his nephew. The three have spent the past two nights living by candlelight and electric lanterns. "When it's dark you just can't, you just can't maneuver around the house even though you know the house inside and out," Booker said. Booker, who is a deacon at a local church, said he'd like to spend the long, dark evenings studying his Bible, but he worries reading with little light will mess his eyes up. "Like we always say, you know, 'why me?,'" Booker said. "That's just the way that God works. We can't do nothing about. We just have to take what he give us."
