Ku-ring-gai Green Waste

One of the first places I visited out of my local area for videos was Ku-ring-gai, and there I found the Veolia fleet which handled collections across the council area. One of the particularly cool things home to this council is the big green 360L Schaefer bins used for garden waste, which replaced the historic cylindrical Rapid Rail containers in the mid 2000s. As far as I know Ku-ring-gai is the only place in the country with these extra large bins for the green waste service, which complements the large amount of vegetation material produced in this northern Sydney region, home to some very large and bushy properties. With the substantial volume and mass of organic material requiring collection by side loaders, it’s not a job for your average side arm truck. Back when it was still Collex, Veolia purchased three MacDonald Johnston Iveco one arm bandits with high capacity bodies and special blades atop the paddle packers to look after green waste duties, with the equipment put through its paces for 10+ years. When a new contract started in late 2016 the company needed to upgrade the tired green waste fleet, looking to Iveco again for the cab chassis, but decided to approach Superior Pak for a side loading compactor. It worked out that Veolia and Superior Pak associated in partnership to produce this different green waste spec Raptor model, being an improvement over the previous version to be fit for purpose for the Ku-ring-gai conditions. The results have seen an increase in hopper capacity, longer pendulum travel distance to aid with material dropping and packing, a modified blade face to assist load distribution and the addition of shark teeth to avoid having material bounce back into the hopper. With what I’ve seen and been told it has been a pretty successful design, with the modern Rotac series lifter standing strong while throwing the heavy bins and the pendulum handling the inflow of material very well. One thing I don’t think can be improved upon is the average 250 bin loads that are achieved in this area, reached either from packing out with light material or hitting legal tonnage... it’s serious lifting with these 360Ls! Even though the regular Raptor grabbers wrap around these big bins fine, I’m told the extra heavy bins would sometimes slip through, so slightly longer grab arms have since been retrofitted for extra grip security. I note the grab change has seen the removal of the hopper roof due to bin handles getting caught underneath the front edge, which explains the unusually wide opening of the loading area. When I worked at Hornsby I would tip off green waste alongside the Ku-ring-gai trucks at Kimbriki, seeing the old machinery offloading until the brand new gear started showing up during 2017. I knew I had to get one in action, but it wasn’t until April just gone that I finally did, catching up with a champion former co-worker who was behind the wheel of one. In a wider group of these 29m green waste application side loaders also used in the council for garbage and paper recycling, truck #25567 here is 1 of 4 vehicles utilised for green waste fulltime. We see it tackling a Thursday run in the suburb of St Ives from sunrise, taken during the middle of autumn when the job is between its heaviest and lightest seasons. This is a longer video with plenty of action to see throughout, but should be an easy watch considering the different content, including the combination of two shots from visits to the transfer station. The last time I showed anything of Ku-ring-gai greens was over 11 years ago, so I’m well overdue for a fresh upload of this domestic service which I’m happy to finally share! I’ve actually had a video of an old truck sitting ready since 2016, but I was determined to show one of these new Superior Paks beforehand.
