James Longstreet was one of the most important—and most misunderstood—figures of the American Civil War. Serving as Robert E. Lee’s most senior corps commander, Longstreet was not a romantic battlefield hero chasing glory. He was a cold, analytical soldier who believed the Confederacy could only survive through defensive warfare, strong positions, and smart use of manpower. Long before Gettysburg, Longstreet warned that attacking well-entrenched Union forces was suicidal in the age of rifled muskets and mass artillery. His opposition to Pickett’s Charge and his push to reinforce the Western Theater show that he understood the war as a problem of logistics and mathematics, not honor. History often blamed him for Confederate failures, but modern historians increasingly see Longstreet as the general who was right too early—and ignored when it mattered most. #history #civilwarhistory
