Watercolor is often taught through rules, some of which are helpful guidelines. But others can be challenged. Painting light to dark helps preserve highlights, yet opaque white paint can create fog, foam, and sharp accents that paper alone cannot. Avoiding black encourages color mixing, but true black can add controlled contrast and drama. The warning against mud reminds painters not to overmix, though subdued tones can unify a composition and support brighter colors. Scrubbing paper is risky on student-grade sheets, but high-quality watercolor papers with strong fiber and sizing can tolerate limited abrasion. Artists such as Charles Burchfield even used stiff, trimmed brushes to lift highlights and make corrections. Masking fluid is often dismissed, but liquid frisket enables complex patterns and layered effects when used with skill and intent. Rules build control, but curiosity and informed choices lead to discovery in watercolor practice.
