Korea Adventure: Part 42, Taekkyeon Martial Arts

I was fortunate enough to be invited to a Taekkyeon tournament today in Insadong (인사동), Seoul--and get front row seats on top of that. For those who are not familiar with Takkyeon, it is a traditional martial art of Korea--similar in some respects to Taekwondo. Taekkyeon flourished during the Joseon Period of Korean history, and was closely linked to military training for a long time--until eventually becoming more of a recreational sport. As far as the rules are concerned, two fighters circle each other and try to gain an advantage; the match is won when a fighter manages to land a clean kick to the head, or take his opponent to the ground (as you'll see in this video).
