Amidst the fast-paced urban environment, Tanish Residence was designed as a peaceful sanctuary for a family of doctors. Nestled between multiple hospitals, the home prioritizes privacy, natural light, and connectivity with nature while maintaining a traditional aesthetic. The key element of the design is the central courtyard, which acts as the heart of the home, seamlessly integrating indoor and outdoor spaces while ensuring a tranquil atmosphere. The residence is designed around two interconnected blocks, with windows and openings strategically placed towards the east and north to optimize natural ventilation and daylight. The house features green pockets, including a front garden, a central courtyard with a focal tree, and a rear garden connected to the bedrooms, ensuring that green spaces are always within sight. The rooftop garden further extends this connection to nature, making greenery an integral part of the home’s design and ambiance. Traditional materials and craftsmanship play a vital role in defining the character of the house. Elements such as terracotta jaali, corten steel screens, and hand-carved teakwood add a layer of timelessness while maintaining privacy and enhancing ventilation. The jaali screens along the north and east facades provide a delicate balance between openness and seclusion, allowing airflow while shielding the interiors from direct views of neighboring structures. On the first floor, the double-height volume strengthens the vertical connection between levels, ensuring openness and interaction among family members. Balconies overlook the lower courtyard and gardens, further enhancing the home’s seamless integration of spaces. The second floor houses a semi-open gym and storage area, offering additional functionality while maintaining the theme of openness and tranquility. One of the standout features of this home is the play of light and shadow. A carefully designed skylight introduces dynamic patterns that shift throughout the day, bringing a sense of movement and liveliness to the interiors. The pooja space, framed with handcrafted wood and intricate detailing, adds a spiritual essence to the home while maintaining a visual connection with the courtyard. By thoughtfully balancing privacy, openness, and nature, this residence stands as a perfect example of how architecture can create a calm and rejuvenating living environment amidst an otherwise chaotic setting.
