The M100 Elan was the result, developed on an enormous $30 million budget and powered by a turbocharged Isuzu engine. The main talking point was its front-wheel drive layout, a first for a car from Hethel. But could the M100 get through the challenges of Lotus changing ownership from GM to Bugatti, a recession making it expensive and of course, the ubiquitous Mazda MX5 proving a smash-hit just as the Elan was launched?
