It is said that at night, they wander silently through the city, slipping into merchants’ houses and testing people’s character. One tale tells of a rice merchant during the Edo period. One night, he found a white fox at his doorstep. Instead of chasing it away, he offered a small bowl of rice. The fox ate the rice and vanished. The next day, the merchant’s business flourished—his storehouses were suddenly filled with rice.
