The Fox Spirits of Kyoto! In the north of Kyoto lies the Fushimi Inari Shrine, famous for its hundreds of red torii gates. But beyond its beauty, it carries a mysterious legend. According to folklore, the shrine is guarded by kitsune—fox spirits. These are no ordinary animals; they can shapeshift into human form, often appearing as beautiful women. It is said that at night, they wander silently through the city, slipping into merchants’ houses and testing people’s character. One tale tells of a rice merchant during the Edo period. One night, he found a white fox at his doorstep. Instead of chasing it away, he offered a small bowl of rice. The fox ate the rice and vanished. The next day, the merchant’s business flourished—his storehouses were suddenly filled with rice. When people heard the story, they would say: “The foxes of Inari bless the generous, but test the greedy.” Even today, people in Kyoto bring offerings of rice, sake, or fried tofu (said to be the foxes’ favorite food) to the Fushimi Inari Shrine—just in case a kitsune might visit their door at night. #kyoto #japan #travel #vlog #location #theweekendwalkers
