Nicki Panoskaltsis and Athanasios Mantalaris talk about their experience as a couple in their professional life and the way to their own success! From Greece to Canada, then to New York and from there to the Imperial College of London. They explain the challenges and the opportunities they had as well as the way the establishment of an interdisciplinary laboratory helped them to exchange ideas and think in a different way. All these led to their innovative research and the creation of a bioreactor for blood production, which can affect the lives of many people! Athanasios Mantalaris together with his wife, Nicki Panoskaltsis, co-founded the Interdisciplinary Biological Systems Engineering Laboratory at the Department of Chemical Engineering at Imperial College London. His expertise is in the modeling of biological systems and bioprocesses, with a focus on mammalian cell culture systems, stem cell bioprocessing, and tissue engineering. Her main research interest is on the immune pathogenesis of Acute Myeloid Leukemia (AML) using bio-inspired 3D ex vivo models, and in creating novel methods of improving immunochemotherapy-based precision treatments. Athanasios Mantalaris is currently a Professor in BioSystems Engineering at the Department of Chemical Engineering at Imperial College London. Nicki Panoskaltsis is currently an Associate Professor in Haematology at Imperial College London and Head of the Haematology Department at London North West Healthcare NHS Trust, and a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians (UK).
