Tallis Scholars - Peter Phillips, conductor (released on Gimell Records) score follower video for education purposes The penultimate mass cycle in Petrucci's landmark publication 'Misse Josquin,' the 'Missa Fortuna Desperata' represents one of the many high watermarks of Josquin's compositional language and prowess of craft. Likely written during or slightly before his stint in the Papal choir from 1489-1494, 'Missa Fortuna Desperata' is unique in its time for its islands of spare contrapuntal motion. With this piece written likely after Jacob Obrecht's own, massive 'Missa Fortuna' it is possible to imagine that Josquin looked to simplify his contrapuntal language to the maximum as a response to Obrecht, who was a towering figure in the Franco-Flemish school of composition around this time. The polyphonic song on which this mass is based is usually credited to Antoine Busnoys, but is much more probably by the obscure Florentine composer, Felice, documented until 1478.
