In this Sunday Mass Homily at Saint Michael Kalibo, Fr. Romie-Jun reminded us to rejoice even in this Lenten Season. This fourth Sunday of Lent is also known as the Laetare Sunday. "Laetare" is a Latin word that means, "rejoice". We are to look beyond the future - to hope despite of the sufferings because we have eternal life and eternal salvation. For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life. (John 3: 16).This verse is well- known to us Christians, reminding us that we have eternal life through the sacrifice of Jesus Christ. But the Gospel started from John 3: 14- 15, which bring us to the first key point: that we must face our fears. In the First Reading, Moses together with Israelites were entering the Promised Land. During their journey, the people were murmuring because they faced so many challenges- such as hunger and tiredness. God was destroying the old thought pattern of the lives of Israelites - that they were going to be slaves forever, that is why He brought them to the Promised Land. However, as God helps us, me must also work with Him. We must learn to obey and trust God as we pass through the wilderness of our lives. Trust Him that He is working mightily in us. God also sent serpents that bit the people and many of them died along the way. The snake was a foreshadowing of Christ's death on the cross. This tells us to face our fears rather than to run away. Salvation begins when we face our fears. “Make a fiery serpent, and set it on a pole; and it shall be that everyone who is bitten, when he looks at it, shall live.” (Numbers 12: 8). We have so many insecurities in life. God told the people to face the serpent in order for their sickness to vanish. It is time to face our fears, for your fear for one thing will give birth to another fear if we choose to run away. For "in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us." (Romans 8: 37). The second key point was derived from John 3:17, which remind us that God does not condemn. Salvation starts with God. He loves us not because we are good, but because He chose to love us. It is not about us but rather about God. He, who is supposed to make us suffer from our transgressions, chose to show His love to us and took away our sins through the death of Jesus Christ. God sent Jesus not to condemn, but to save us. As we read John 3: 16, we should understand the meaning of this verse. Do not be afraid of your fears and look at them in the light. No matter how sinful we are, we could never make God hate and condemn us. Fourth Sunday in Lent- March 10, 2024 Theme: "Go and Proclaim: The Saving Grace of our Lord Jesus Christ!"
