Spider Walk was composed for and dedicated to Stanisław Skoczyński and was premiered on November 10, 1993, at the Percussive Arts Society International Convention in Columbus, Ohio. The formal design of the work is constructed on the principle of the Golden Ratio’s proportions. Small rhythmic units, as well as whole rhythmic phrases, are built and developed on the so-called “logarithmic spiral,” the same ratios in which pine cones grow and spiders make their webs. In addition, the arithmetical progression 1-2-3-4-5-6 is present in the work in several ways. It is visible in the instrumentation: six drums (five tom-toms and one bass drum), five almglocken, four Thai gongs, three cowbells, two cymbals, and one dead cowbell. It is also audible in the construction of rhythmic motives. —Marta Ptaszyńska
